Understanding Laser Hair Removal

The lasers produce a beam of highly concentrated light that is absorbed by the pigment or melanin in the follicle and permanently disables the follicle’s ability to grow new hair.

The light emitted by our Light Sheer Diode laser is absorbed by the pigment located in hair follicles. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to vaporize the hair, but not long enough to affect the surrounding skin. This in turn disables numerous follicles at a time to, eliminate or significantly impede the hair's regrowth.

There are three distinct phases to the hair growth cycle (see below). Treatments are most effective during the active growth phase (anagen), when the highest concentration of pigment is present, and is less effective during the other two phases. Because these phases occur at different times in different hair follicles, a series of treatments are required to effectively target and disable hair follicles that subsequently enter the growth phase of the cycles.

Growth phases of hair

1. Hair’s active growth phase is called anagen. During anagen, the hair contains an abundance of melanin, the pigment which gives your hair its color. This is the phase during which laser hair removal treatment is most effective.

2. The regression phase, called catagen, is when the lower part of the hair stops growing but is not shed, and the follicle is reabsorbed.

3. The resting phase, called telogen, is when the old hair falls out in preparation for the development of new hair.

What you can expect

The length of a laser session may be a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated. The first four or so treatments are scheduled at approximately 8-12 week intervals for the body and 6-8 week intervals for the face. The staggered treatments will catch and permanently disable the maximum number of hair follicles in an active growth phase. Most of the darker hairs in the treatment area will be destroyed during the treatment, and you will enjoy being hair-free for the majority of the time in between your treatments.

During the laser treatment, you may feel some discomfort similar to being snapped with a rubber band. This sensation lasts only a short while during the treatment, and most clients tolerate the entire procedure well.

For sensitive clients, a topical anesthetic cream of 5% lidocaine is available for purchase at our office, which must be applied up to one hour prior to your treatment.

The appearance of the treated area immediately after a laser session will vary from each individual depending on the extent of treatment and skin type. Immediate after-effects, if any, are minor. You may experience redness and swelling, which subside in a couple of hours to a couple of days. Most people return to normal activity right away. We will be happy to tell you more about your treatment and what you can expect during your complimentary consultation.
